Carla Rak is an Italian visual artist, lecturer and scholar whose research ranges from photography to collage and textiles.
Her professional and creative life has always revolved around a multidisciplinary, integrated approach involving academic commitments, consulting for photographic projects, conceptual and intellectual forays as well as hands-on production.
Graduated in Sociology and with a PhD in Communication Sciences, her academic writings on visual language gained her the recognition of the Institute of Philosophical Studies in Naples and the Cozzi Prize from the Benetton Foundation.
In 2018 her first book “Eyes as Oars. A visual journey to Mars” has been published by Danilo Montanari editore.
Since the same year she started also developing her side project Aprile Textiles, her playground to experiment with ideas, techniques and inspirations. Born out of the desire to establish a more intimate connection with her audience and to promote a way of living that involves a sustainable vision and personal touches, ethically and aesthetically far from the standardized logic of mass production, Aprile is dedicated to the creation of one of a kind or numbered limited series of cushions and wallhangings, designed and handcrafted by her with a whole range of of techniques. Her collections, ephemeral fruit of inspirations that vary from time to time, are distributed all over the world by Artemest.
